White Oak: What You Need to Know
A dense hardwood, white oak is durable and endlessly versatile, featuring a neutral color ranging from white and cream to beige and light brown. It is durable, resistant to shock, and ages beautifully. We can even stain white oak to achieve specific colors or shades to better match your interior. Rift Cut Veneer: Why Cut Matters
White oak grains tend to be longer than red oak grains, and they can be quite knotty. With careful selection and cutting techniques, we can limit the appearance of knots in any given log. Our veneer is available in several cuts. Quarter-sawn White Oak veneer is one option in which we cut the log into quarters and then shave each quarter into sheets perpendicular to the growth rings. This produces a veneer with a plumed, “flaked” appearance.
Plain-sliced veneer is another option. To plain slice veneer, we turn the log a few inches with each cut to produce a distinctive “cathedral” grain pattern. For plain slicing, we cut along the growth rings to maximize the amount of veneer we can produce.
In this case, we’ve used rift-cut white oak to create the veneer. We first cut the log into quarters, as with quarter-cut veneer. However, instead of cutting the quarters perpendicular to the growth rings, we cut each one at a 15-degree angle. This results in a sleek, straight, smooth grain pattern. This method eliminates the “flakes” and “rays” that characterize quarter-cut veneers and the elaborate “cathedral” figures that are noticeable in plain-sliced veneer.
