Wood Veneer Wallcoverings: Understanding Cut, Color, and More!

Wood veneer is prized for its ability to transform any space, adding sophistication, prestige, and beauty. The way we cut, stain, finish, and match the veneer plays a big role in the final look of the project.

Several types of cuts can be used to create veneer. This involves slicing the log into incredibly thin sheets. A simple alteration in the way the log is cut can make all the difference when it comes to the look of the final product. For this installation, we used a quarter cut. We cut the log into quarters at a radial angle, and these quarters are sliced so that the growth rings intersect the board’s face at a 90-degree angle. This creates a smooth, fine-grain pattern.

The natural color of the cherry is light with a pinkish-brown tone. As it matures, it deepens to a richer, warmer tone. The natural color of cherry wood is highly desirable, but it accepts stains and dyes readily, making it incredibly versatile. At Jacaranda, we offer a variety of stains and dyes, including custom colors, and these can be added to your preferred veneer to achieve the look you want.

By carefully matching veneer, we can create a variety of striking effects, including flowing patterns and seamless finishes. We can bring various architectural details to life, using contrasting colors, textures, and more. To ensure ideal results, we select and arrange each sheet carefully to bring out the natural beauty of the wood and create breathtaking patterns.

Cherry veneer is often book-matched, which means that the sheets of veneer are applied in an alternating pattern, resulting in a book or mirror-like effect. Slip matching is another option, and instead of flipping alternate leaves, the sheets of veneer are placed in order, which results in a repeating pattern. Slip matching is popular with straight grains. This project featured random matching cherry veneer, which, as the name suggests, involves applying various veneer sheets in a deliberately random pattern for more of a visual impact.
