Elevating Interiors with Sequence Matching Jacaranda’s Cherry FC Veneer Installation at Yancoal Sydney

Jacaranda’s fine wood veneers bring elegance and sophistication to some of the world’s most recognizable corporate spaces. One standout example is our latest veneer installation at Yancoal’s Sydney offices. Covering 8,100 square feet, this project features a SanFoot Cherry FC veneer, expertly installed using sequence matching. The brilliant cherry wood flows continuously across walls and doors, creating a cohesive, visually stunning environment.

The Timeless Appeal of Cherry Wood

Cherry wood has been popular for centuries thanks to its beautiful color and attractive grain pattern. When first cut, cherry boasts a soft, pastel pink hue, which matures over time into a rich red-brown tone imbued with warmth and character. The fine, straight grain of cherry is punctuated by delicate variations such as small knots, swirls, and color variations due to mineral deposits.

Beyond its visual qualities, cherry is prized for its durability. With its medium density, it strikes a balance between flexibility, strength, and adaptability. It takes to finish well, with its deeper undertones maturing with a sense of warmth and elegance.

Veneer Matching: Sequence Matching for Stunning Effect

Wood veneers are wafer-thin slices of wood bonded to a secure substrate. How the wood is cut and matched affects the final look of the product. For Yancoal’s Sydney offices, we used flat-cut cherry wood and enhanced its impact through the sequence matching technique.

To create a flat-cut veneer, we mounted a half log with the heart side flat against the slicer’s flitch table. Cutting parallel to the length of the log, we created a signature “cathedral effect,” a pattern celebrated for its visually appealing arches and curves.

To elevate the installation’s visual impact, our design team utilized sequence matching to add depth to the space and maintain continuity in the pattern. Veneer sheets can be matched in various ways to achieve the desired effect.

Options Beyond Sequence Matching

While sequence matching was the ideal choice for the Yancoal project, other veneer matching techniques are popular options:

  • Book matching: Veneers are flipped open, facing each other like book pages, creating mirrored patterns.
  • Slip matching: Aligns consecutive sheets in the same direction for a calmer flow
  • Random matching: Veneer sheets are placed randomly without attention to grain alignment, resulting in a rustic, varied aesthetic.

Sequence matching ensures a consistent pattern from panel to panel, which has a remarkable effect. With a sleek grain like cherry wood, the results are smooth and entrancing. For woods with more prominent grains, such as walnut, hickory, and maple, sequence matching produces bold and breathtaking results.

Creating a Professional & Inviting Space

At the Yancoal offices, the sequence-matched cherry created a relaxing yet sophisticated effect. The natural ebb and flow complements Yancoal’s professional yet inviting environment. The rich warmth of the cherry wood naturally suits the commercial space, creating a refined, timeless space that feels chic without compromising comfort.
